About the Club Print

Previously known as “TMCC" (Tauranga Mount Motorsport Club), MotorSport Bay of Plenty Inc evolved from the three previous motorsport clubs that had been very active in the area since 1948. These clubs conveniently divided up the sport among themselves and existed in wonderful harmony. Tauranga Car Club looked after Circuit Racing; Mount Maunganui Car Club specialized in the Rally and Trialing, while the third very unique club known as Bay Park Supporters Club was focused totally on Stewarding and Marshalling.   Life in the Bay of Plenty for motorsport enthusiasts during the period of these clubs was idyllic. The region boasted its own 'International' Race Circuit known as Bay Park and was the home of the popular Mount Rally.

Sadly, as a result of rising land prices and noise restrictions, Bay Park Raceway eventually yielded and the sport diminished in popularity.
Around 1994 the combined membership of the clubs dwindled and they slipped into recession.  A number of attempts to amalgamate the clubs failed until in 1996 a core group of motorsport enthusiasts held a meeting at a local business premises and determined that a new club would be formed.  That club became TMMC.  The Founding executive was Graham Fraser, David Short and Philip King. Following negotiations with the few remaining members of the old Tauranga and Mount Maunganui Clubs, the substantial assets and trophies of those organisations were formally absorbed into the new entity.

The new club grew astonishingly quickly to almost 200 members. Much of the credit was due to the Executive convincing members to employ a professional Secretary / Treasurer.  Peter Cutten steered the burgeoning club through membership growth to financial security and regular events.  Ever since, the TMMC has enjoyed a healthy membership and regular monthly competition activities.
Sealed & Gravel Hillclimbs, Bent Sprints, Grasskanas, Trials, Clubsport races at Taupo Circuit, and an assortment of enjoyable social events are regular club activities together with invitations to other club competitions.

In 2008 the club executive, with the assistance of a couple of senior members began a comprehensive review of the club constitution.  It was also determined, that in conjunction with this review, there should also be some thought about a new name for the Club.  It was felt that we needed something to better reflect the wideranging membership base and the area in which we play.  Thus, at the 2008 AGM two formal proposals were made - one to adopt a new, updated constiution and one to adopt a new name.  Both proposals were unanimously passed by the well represented meeting, with many founding members speaking enthusiastically in support of the new name.  MotorSport Bay of Plenty Inc had come into being.

The club continues to pursue it's two principle aims - to increase motoring skills among its members and to facilitate regular motorsport competition.  If you love cars, driving or enjoy any motorsport activity, join us.
